ART CS 102, Section 1 EC # 00802
DRAWING FROM LIFE: THE JOURNAL AS ART

The impulse to record our daily lives on paper is nothing if not universal. Still, only a few of us have the discipline to make it past the first few entries, and create diaries whose insight and visual beauty can inspire anyone but their authors. Drawing from Life: The Journal As Art is an exploration of these exceptions---books of obsessive wonder filled to their borders with drawings, sketches, watercolors, graphs, charts, lists, collages, portraits and photographs. UCSB Arts Library Collection of Artist/Sketchbook Journals and those in Special Collections give us a peek at how artistic souls observe, reflect, explore, and create. The class will be taught in conjunction with the University Art Museum's exhibition of Dan Eldon: The Journey is the Destination .

Instructor(s): Gary Brown
