READING & WRITING MEMOIR AS POETRY

READING: We'll study a collection of essays about poetry's relation to memoir, supported by an extensive series of handouts illustrating the range of memoir-based poems. We'll also contemplate work by two noted poets of different generations known for "confessional" poems.

WRITING: Each student will experiment with a poetry-memoir covering key life events and concerns. During the quarter at least 10 ambitious memoir-poems should reach "finished" form (3 of these to be offered for workshop attention). Everyone will present a Progress Report around mid-term and hand in a portfolio containing a memoir-sequence of 10 to 20 poems as a final class project.

Required Texts:

Ted Hughes, Birthday Letters: Poems
eds. Graham & Sontag, After Confession
Sharon Olds, Strike Sparks : Selected Poems
Course limited to 15.

Instructor(s): Barry Spacks
