Note: This course will involve 4 field trips. Tentative Dates Below. UCSB can be considered as an extension to the north of one of the major art centers of the world - Los Angeles. This spring we have the opportunity to see a number of very substantial art exhibits throughout the Los Angeles area. The course will take students on four one-day field trips, to as many venues as possible, to view art firsthand. Weekly class meetings will include lectures and discussions on topics related to contemporary art, overviews of the venues we will visit, and discussions upon return of the work we saw. Logistics for traveling will also be organized at these meetings. Students will be responsible for carpool travel, and for sharing expenses with those who drive. Admission will be free, or at a reduced rate, for most venues. Each student will be required to carry and keep a field journal (small sketch book) for keeping notes and drawings at the various locations. These will be used throughout the quarter in class discussions and turned in at the end of the quarter. Each student will also be required to complete a paper generated from their field research that includes a studio or visual component. Required reading, distributed throughout the quarter, will include issues on contemporary art as well as information on the artists and venues we will be viewing. NOTE: You must plan to attend all fieldtrips, all Thursday class meetings, keep a journal and complete the research paper to enroll in the class. Tentative dates for fieldtrips will include 2 Saturdays, one Sunday and one Friday. This is to give a variety of times for students who must request time off from weekend work. Plan ahead. April 14 Saturday April 28 Saturday June 1 Friday or Saturday June 2 (to be determined) Transportation needs: Ratio: 1:4 - 1 Car (with seatbelts & insurance!) for every 4 students Enrollment will be limited to 20 students. This will be determined at the first class meeting. CCS students will have priority; and CCS students ˇwith cars will have double priority.
