LITERATURE CS 15, Section 1 EC # 28530
EXISTENCIALISMO: SPANISH AND LATIN AMERICAN LIT

STUDENT COLLOQUIUM

From murders in Buenos Aires to desolation in Barcelona, we will take a subway ride through the most exciting literature written in Spanish that you've probably never heard of in America.

Literary existentialism is commonly defined by characters who struggle with the hopelessness and absurdity of life, those who are unable to fit into society and who are unhappy with the identities they have created for themselves. Upon studying abroad in Spain, I discovered that much of my favorite existential literature was Latin American as well as Spanish. We will read existential literature from both Latin America and Spain, comparing and contrasting these two radically different Spanish-speaking worlds.

We will explore the myths and realities of Latin American "Boom" literature, and we will learn about the Spanish Civil War and the resulting dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. Nearly all of the narratives we will read are written in the first person, delving into painful self-exploration.

We will read novels, novellas, poems and essays. There will be a course reader with short novels and essays.
