We'll read and discuss in detail at least three published screenplays (Cleese's A Fish Called Wanda, Kaufman's Human Nature, Rubin's Jacob's Ladder), ask students to conduct two pitch/brainstorming sessions (at early and advanced stages of composition) involving the feature length script (or two short film scripts) required as the main writing of the term. Members of the group will also be asked to attend at least three screenings of films on campus, in town, or on DVD (movies of their choice) in order to offer short written reviews presented for comment in class. Emphasis will focus on group involvement with the development of individual scripts, with sessions on required screenplay formatting, the marketing of screenplays, and the application of our reading and film reviewing to the particular writing projects at play in the room. As a course feature for optional attendance, we'll schedule a weekly UCEN campus lunch meeting devoted to impromptu problem-solving regarding difficulties with structure, theme, dialogue, what have you.
