ABSTRACT ALGEBRA

This course is required for all first year CCS Mathematics majors

This is a first-year course which is part of a sequence of three consecutive courses centered in the interaction between Algebra and Geometry.

Abstract Algebra is the field of mathematics that studies algebraic structures, such as groups, rings, fields, modules, vector spaces, and algebras. This course is a basic introduction to this area of mathematics. We will focus our attention in Groups and Commutative Rings. Group Theory was introduced by Galois in the early 1800s. Nowadays, the language of group theory is the precise way to discuss various types of symmetry, both in geometry and elsewhere. Commutative rings provide the proper context in which to study number theory as well as many aspects of the theory of polynomials.
