MUSIC CS 105, Section 1 EC # 35709
FROM WHOLE NOTES TO BANK NOTES: MUSIC NOTATION, COPYING, AND PUBLICATION

The purpose of this course is to provide composers with a thorough overview of the preparation and presentation of printed music, from its basic notation, to copying and preparation of scores and parts, to eventual publication.

Beginning with an examination of standard notation practices as well as contemporary,

alternative and experimental notations, we will then examine the art, tools, and techniques of autography, i.e. "hand-copying". Next we will discuss in-depth the modern practice of computer music engraving and get an orientation to Score, Finale, and Sibelius notation software. Special emphasis will be placed on the limitations and problems these programs present, and how to work around them.

Finally we will address matters of the business of music publication and how to do it yourself. Upon completion of this course students will have all the information and understanding necessary for presenting their music to a high professional standard, meeting the expectations of orchestras, professional ensembles and publishing houses, and starting their own publishing business.
