Are you old enough to remember when Watson declared that nearly all disease would be cured within a few short years of deciphering the human genome? Masked behind the hype and the hope lies the real science. We will read, critique and discuss current literature in the cell/molecular bio sciences that spawns news stories in the popular press. Most of these will have a biomedical slant. Students will identify and pair news media releases, popular science writing, and the actual primary literature in an attempt to dissect the "science" from the "spin." A reading list and detailed syllabus will be available before the start of the quarter. Open to all CCS students, but be prepared to tackle the primary literature in biomedical journals. Instructor(s): Kathleen Foltz Time(s): Fridays, 10:00 am-12:00 pm Place(s): Old Little Theatre, Rm. 164B << Back |
