BIOLOGY CS 101, Section 1 EC # 03210
FRONTIERS IN MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Are you old enough to remember when Watson declared that nearly all disease would be cured within a few short years of deciphering the human genome? Masked behind the hype and the hope lies the real science. We will read, critique and discuss current literature in the cell/molecular bio sciences that spawns news stories in the popular press. Most of these will have a biomedical slant. Students will identify and pair news media releases, popular science writing, and the actual primary literature in an attempt to dissect the "science" from the "spin." A reading list and detailed syllabus will be available before the start of the quarter.

Open to all CCS students, but be prepared to tackle the primary literature in biomedical journals.
