This course deals with human health from an evolutionary perspective. Under what sort of conditions did humans evolve, and how can current medical challenges be interpreted given this ancient blueprint in a modern context? We will cover the following topics: Infectious disease; Injury/toxins; Genetic disease/aging; Modern living/nutrition; Allergy/autoimmune diseases; Cancer; Sex and reproduction; Mental health; and Alternative medical approaches. Students need not be biologists to participate fully. Taught by infectious disease experts, evolutionary biologists, and a local M.D. Open to all majors. Required Texts: Nesse, R.M.
