INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES CS 120, Section 2 EC # 59824
SHAKESPEARIAN VERSE THROUGH PERFORMANCE

Modern Shakespearean studies are placing an increasing emphasis on bringing "stage and page" together. This class is designed to give participants a ground level opportunity to explore Shakespearean verse through practical application and experimentation, providing students of various disciplines the rare chance to deconstruct early modern texts for the purposes of finding their performance practicality. Participants will find themselves working as actors, directors, and script editors while bringing the texts to life. The purpose is to give students a useful approach to acting the classics, not to create a renaissance themed acting style.

Working from the knowledge that the texts were meant to aid an actors through performance, the emphasis in this class is in the doing by using original staging techniques of audience address, continual staging, minimal settings/ properties, and fluid delivery. Attention will be paid to meter as it pertains to performance. Emulating original rehearsal techniques, we will also explore the merits of using individual sides instead of complete scripts.

Complementing our Elizabethan approach to staging, we will experiment with original texts, using both folio and quarto versions side by side to test their various merits. Special attention will be given to problematic texts which have, in recent years, been reevaluated as possible acting versions of these scripts; some of these texts will include the first folio Henry V, the "Bad Quarto" Hamlet, as well as the various versions of Lear.
