TALES OF CHEKHOV

Chekhov is my personal hero. I would like a god with a mind and heart like Chekhov's. Thirty five years ago the Ecco Press published a fourteen volume edition of Constance Garnett's translations. They've been out of print for a long time, but now they're back. We're lucky. Here's what other writers have to say about him:

It seems to be part of the human condition that a wall of glass separates one life from another. For Chekhov it did not exist. Though no church has seen fit to canonize him, he was nevertheless a saint. William Maxwell

He is one of those writers who seem to work without artifice; we experience above all his humane intelligence and his perception. He is an athlete, a hero of perception. Robert Stone

Those of us who write short stories--- could we, if there had been no Chekhov? he showed that in the apparently inconsequential lie the enormities of human behavior? Nadine Gordimer

In story after story, explosions of truth make his point for him. Escapism has no place; all human sentiment, however humble its manifestation, is worthy of investigation. William Trevor

Ask any thoughtful reader - a student or teacher of literature, a critic or another writer, and you will find agreement: Chekhov is the best short story writer who ever lived. Raymond Carver
