PROBLEM SOLVING III

This is the third part of a sequence of three courses about mathematical problem solving for freshmen. These courses are aimed for students who know some mathematics, who enjoy mathematics, and would like to spend some time once a week solving intriguing, challenging, interesting, and fun, problems.

What's the difference between an exercise and a problem in mathematics? An exercise is a question you know how to solve immediately. In contrast, a problem demands much thought and resourcefulness before the right approach is found. In this seminar, we will review the more important strategies and tactics to solve problems in the main areas of mathematics: algebra, combinatorics, number theory, geometry, calculus, and graph theory, by doing problems, one problem a day. At the end of the quarter, we will have a fun competition among all the participants and any other interested students.

Instructor(s): Maribel Bueno Cachadina
