TOPICS IN NUMBER THEORY

This course will be an introduction to number theory. I shall assume that students attending this course have taken the standard Fall Quarter course "Introduction to Higher Mathematics", or its equivalent. I have not yet decided the exact form that the course will take, but some topics that may be covered will be chosen

from:

Congruences and primitive roots. Arithmetic functions. The law of quadratic reciprocity. Sums of squares. Continued fractions and diophantine approximation. Binary quadratic forms.
