PHYSICS CS 140, Section 1 EC # 37820
PHYSICS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

In this course we will introduce and analyze the physics of the main radiative forcings responsible for climate change. Natural forcings such as the variations of solar radiation input or volcanic eruptions, as well as the main anthropogenic forcings (greenhouse gases, aerosols, land surface changes) will be investigated. The course will be structured around a state-of-the-art, easy-to-use radiative transfer model that will be used by students to quantitatively explore these different forcings and the climate response. The course will also focus on feedback processes and the uncertainties they induce in the prediction of future climate. At the course's end, students will have a greater appreciation of the dynamic factors that influence Earth climate, as well of the tools that are applied to understand and predict the effects of these factors.
