COMPOSING FOR THE CARILLON

The UCSB carillon, located atop Storke Tower, is one of the finest of the approximate 600 carillons in the world. Its 61 bells range in weight from 2.5 tons to 20 pounds. Because a bell has a different overtone series than any other musical instrument, carillon composition is different, challenging and fun. Besides studying scores and listening to recordings, students will visit the upper tower area to watch the keyboard instrument being played and to see how the keyboard's mechanical action is designed to provide a wide range of dynamics. Selected student scores will be performed during the term.

THIS COURSE IS OPEN TO ALL CCS/L&S MUSIC MAJORS first and then to ALL OTHER MAJORS on a space-available basis.

Instructor(s): Margo Halsted
Time(s): Monday, 3:00-5:00pm
Place(s): Old Little Theatre, Rm. 154
