This course is required for all incoming CCS Mathematics freshmen and other first year CCS Math majors Some of the main ingredients necessary to solve mathematical problems are: mathematical knowledge, problem-solving techniques, original thinking, creativity,.. We will review some of the main basic problem-solving techniques. In particular, we will take a look at proofs by induction, Pigeon-hole Principle, use of invariants and symmetries in problem-solving, ordered sets and extremal elements. Every week we will solve challenging problems and we will have tons of fun. Please, bring your creativity and original thinking with you! Students willing to participate in the Putnam competition are encouraged to attend this seminar. Instructor(s): Maribel Bueno Cachadina Time(s): Tuesday, 3:00 pm-4:30 pm Place(s): Bldg. 494, Rm. 160B << Back |
