ART CS 112, Section 3 EC # 01297
CRAFT IN CONTEMPORARY ART

This course will examine the place of craft in contemporary art and is designed for students who enjoy making things and would like to incorporate their craft skills into their artwork. We will discuss the ways in which the long-standing stigmatization of craft in the art world is being challenged by a growing number of artists from Kiki Smith to William Kentridge and overturned by exhibitions such as the recent Pricked: Extreme Embroidery show at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York and Poetics of the Handmade at MOCA in LA.

Development of conceptual ideas will be stressed over perfecting techniques, but technical demonstrations and sharing of knowledge will be encouraged as a means to realizing specific projects. Students will have the opportunity to share their skills with one another, while engaging in a larger discussion about why craft is personally meaningful, the place of handwork in the art world, and the effect of visible labor on conceptual art.

Along with assigned readings & responses, students will present a craft they engage in and enjoy to the group (such as knitting, sewing, etc.). One midterm and one substantial final project that use craft in as a means for expressing ideas are required. There will be a class exhibition at the end of the quarter.

Open to art majors and non-art majors who are seriously interested in creating artwork and who already are comfortable with at least one craft. (Those unsure whether the course would be appropriate for them should contact the instructor at tsginsberg@gmail.com). Instructor approval required to finalize registration.

Note(s): Extra time will be available to work on projects in Room 136 on Fridays from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Some required class demonstrations will be scheduled during this time.

Instructor(s): Tatiana Ginsberg
Time(s): Tuesday 1:30 pm-4:30pm, and selected Fridays TBA
Place(s): Bldg. 494, Rm. 136
