CCS WEBSITE REDESIGN

NOTE: This is a continuation of a course from Winter Quarter---however, students are free to add the course even if they did not participate during Winter Quarter.

This course is about the process of redesigning a website---in particular, the website for CCS. No specific computer expertise is necessary. All majors and all levels are welcome.

Britta Gustafson (CCS 4th year) and Phill Conrad (CCS CS faculty) will be leading a project team that will be:

* assessing the current CCS website

* putting together a prototype of a new site

* testing this website with students, faculty, staff, prospective

students, and alumni

* gathering and editing materials for the site (including text,

photos, other media, and student work)

* establishing processes for keeping the site current going forward

Think of the satisfaction you will feel, knowing that the new CCS web site is truly "your" website---one that you helped to create!

We'll need people to:

* edit text

* take and organize photos

* review designs

* survey students, faculty, staff, alumni about the site

* help staff learn how to update the site

* and more!

The times listed above (MW 1-2:30pm) are the preferred times for the project team to meet.

But we are not limited to those times. If you are interested, and you can't come for part or all of this time, don't let that stop you from signing up! Contact Phill and Britta for more information.

What you'll learn:

We'd argue that every CCS graduate is likely, at some point in her/his career, to be involved in the design of a web site. These days nearly every enterprise these days in the arts and sciences has a web site.

Individual artists (painters, musicians, writers) have their own web sites, as do arts organizations such as galleries, museums, orchestras, etc. Scientists in both academia and business use web sites to convey information about their work.

The process of making a designing a web site involves much more than "learning HTML" or "learning Dreamweaver"---in fact, one could argue that these skills are the least important part, and with the arrival of content management systems, not even essential.

Rather, designing a successful web site involves an analysis of questions such as: who will use the site, what information will they be looking for, how should that information be organized, and what are the processes by which that information will be kept up to date.

There are also visual design considerations that influence the usability and impact of the site. Participation in this project will give you valuable experience with these considerations, working on a real web site---one in which you have a personal stake.

(So, students who want to learn specific technical skills such as HTML, CSS, etc. will have an opportunity to do so---and those skills can be valuable to the project. However, those skills are NOT the main focus of the course.)

Units: The course is nominally 2 units. However, students may earn more or fewer based on their contributions to the project.

We recognize that CCS students tend to have busy schedules, so we are flexible in terms of the amount of time participants commit to the project. The only essentials we ask are:

* please don't commit to more than you can take on

* please try to follow through on what you commit to do

* most essential: please stay in touch with us no matter what.

This last point is most essential. If you get overwhelmed, let us know---don't just disappear and leave us "wondering". That way we can reassign work if needed, to keep the project moving forward.
