Fall 2005 - Fall 2009
| ART CS 105, Section 1 | EC # 01172 | WORDS: INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS PRINTING AND MORE |
This course will introduce beginning students to methods for printing using the letterpress. Setting metal type, creating relief print images, and printing multiple editions will be the focus of the course. While we will focus primarily on the technical aspects of printing, we will also spend time analyzing print works and artists' books to improve our understanding of how the visual and compositional elements interact. The hidden labor of printmaking, so often disguised in the final form, will keep us on a diligent path throughout the quarter. This is not a course for the student who has any romantic notions about letterpress printing. This art form is labor intensive, precise and systematic. Come prepared to get your hands dirty and to spend committed time in the printshop. Advanced students are welcome if they wish to pursue independent letterpress projects. Reading material and website research, along with visits to the UCSB special collections libraries will be included. Enrollment is limited to 12 students.
