Going to medical school from the College in 1978 was considered subversive, anti-intellectual, and certainly anti-creative. Why would any free-thinking person do it?
I chose medicine because I liked the way taking care of someone made me feel. I liked the feeling of helping them get better. I chose food for the same reason?how it made me feel to feed others, especially people I love. To make a healthy diet taste great and look dazzling was and still is novel and physical and exciting to me.
CCS gave me a leg up on trusting my feelings. Writing and speaking about scientifically sound ways of using food as medicine seem as natural as seeing patients, or dicing an onion. When people ask me how I?m able to balance these and other projects in my own life, I tell them that I had very good teachers. Especially CCS? Paula Yurkanis Bruice, Marvin Mudrick, Ian Ross, Max Schott, Alan Stephens and Bea Sweeney. They helped create an environment that was encouraging and open-minded, yet structured. But not too structured. Creative Studies is perfect.
