I knew CCS would be a home for me soon as I sat in Robin Bell's Poetry workshop. I felt intimidated, but it was exciting and challenging. I liked the sense of purpose and seriousness the students had and how Robin valued their work and ideas. The first time I went to Marvin Mudrick's Narrative Prose class it was almost like a religious experience. I was so excited, so happy to be in that crowded classroom! The talk of the importance of fiction, the morality of fiction, the vibrancy of the discussion of stories, the wit of Mudrick and the rapport he had with the students, all of it was tremendously intoxicating. I knew then, that I was in a special place and that I should enjoy it to the fullest. Now, over twenty-five years later, I'm even more convinced that I was very, very lucky to have received my education at CCS. My desire to write, to keep at it after five novels is largely the result of the powerful momentum of my College of Creative Studies days.
