Registration by GOLD: All UCSB
students register through the online GOLD
system. Complete instructions for using the GOLD
system will be found in the Schedule of Classes each quarter. You must
log on to get your appointment times prior to registration each quarter.
You should register at your designated appointment times to obtain the
best possible priority for your class level. Three appointment times are
assigned to you.
During the
first few days of the quarter, there is no charge for adding or dropping
classes. After this period, and throughout the remainder of the quarter,
there will be a $3 fee for each schedule adjustment transaction, including
adds, drops, and changing of grading options. These charges are made to
your BARC statement.
CCS COURSES Each quarter, we post the majority
of CCS course offerings for the following quarter in the CCS bldg and
on the CCS website(www.ccs.ucsb.edu/courses).
in time for registration. Complete CCS course listings will be
available prior to the beginning of the next quarter. Always check at
the start of each quarter for any new courses that may have been added,
and for any changes in days/times/location of your courses. You are strongly
encouraged to add all of your classes as soon as possible but no later
than the end of the 3rd week of classes. You should register for any
CCS courses you plan to take at the time you register for Letters and
Science and/or Engineering courses through GOLD. Note: Always
register for Letters and Science and Engineering courses first as you
do not have priority in those courses. If you intend to take only CCS
classes, you may late register if necessary. If CCS students register only
for Creative Studies courses and meet the late registration deadline
for CCS students that is noted in the schedule of classes each quarter,
they will not be assessed the $ 50 late registration fee. Permission of
the instructor is required for admission to all CCS courses and students
in the College normally have priority enrollment. You may register for
CCS classes and then get the instructors permission later if necessary.
L&S/Engineering
Classes
If you intend to take ANY College of Letters and Science (L&S) or
Engineering courses you must register for them according to the instructions
included in the Schedule of Classes for that quarter, and you must meet
the regular registration deadlines.
Minimum Units
Make sure you sign up for at least 12 units per quarter * - the minimum
required for full-time student status. CCS students generally average
at least 15 units per quarter. There is no maximum number of units that
CCS students can take.
* if no Deficit Load Petition is on file
Note: If you will be taking less than 12 units per quarter on a long term
basis for any reason, you must petition to study under a Permanent Deficit
Program. See Leslie in room 102A for this petition and for further information
regarding this process.
CCS Course Descriptions
As previously noted, CCS courses will be posted each quarter in the College
prior to registration for the following quarter. Quarterly course descriptions
are also found on the CCS website (http://www.ccs.ucsb.edu/courses).
It is strongly recommended that students print out a hard copy (or save an electronic copy) of the
course descriptions each quarter for their personal files and future reference
(for example, when applying to graduate schools and/or professional programs).
Because the majority of CCS courses are different each quarter, and many
are different each year, the actual course content of many CCS courses
is not printed in the UCSB General Catalog. The copies that you print
and keep on file will serve as a permanent record for you of the actual
descriptions and content of the Creative Studies courses you completed.
The College also maintains a file of all past Course Descriptions should
you ever need to make photocopies.
Independent
Study
Any CCS instructor may sponsor an Independent Study with a CCS student.
The student must submit a clearly written or typed proposal to be signed
by the proposed faculty sponsor no later than the second week of classes
each quarter. Independent Study forms are available in the CCS office
room 104. To initiate an Independent Study in a department in the College
of Letters and Science or in the College of Engineering, students must
obtain appropriate forms from the department through which the course
is to be taken and comply with the processes and regulations of that department.
Adding Classes
All UCSB students must officially add all courses for which they expect
credit no later than the fifteenth day of instruction each quarter. There
will be no routine exceptions to this deadline. The course enrollment
figures taken at the end of the third week of instruction are a major
factor in determining UCSBs funding level; it has therefore become
increasingly important that all students add their courses by this deadline.
Change of Grading Option
CCS students may change a grading option (to P/NP or to a letter grade)
in any UCSB course in which they are officially enrolled (provided there
is a grading option offered in that particular course) up until the last
day of instruction of the quarter.
Dropping Classes
CCS student may drop courses up until the last day of instruction (the
end of the ninth week) of the quarter. However, if a course is required
for your major you should get your CCS faculty advisors approval.
You do not need to drop (by petition) a CCS class. Simply
notify the Creative Studies instructor that you will no longer be attending
that class. You will receive zero units in the class and the course will
not appear on your record. However, if you are officially enrolled in
a College of Letters and Science or Engineering course, and you decide
not to complete it, you must drop the course officially. If you simply
disappear from an L&S or Engineering course in which you are enrolled
without officially dropping it, you will receive an F. After
the end of the fourth week of instruction, you must go to the Office
of the Registrar to drop a class. You cannot drop a class by GOLD
after the fourth week although you still may do so in person at the
Registrars Office. As a courtesy, please inform the instructor
that you plan to drop the class.
The above noted privileges allow you to explore interests outside your
major area without fear of academic penalty. You are, however, still required
to:
a) Consult your advisor for approval of your study list each quarter;
b) Achieve standards of work quality and grades acceptable to your advisor.
Important Note for Dual College Majors:
If you have a second major in the College of Letters and Science or Engineering,
you must comply with the drop and change of grading option deadlines of
that college for any courses you are taking through that college. These
deadlines are different from and earlier than those of CCS, and will be
found in the Schedule of Classes each quarter. The add deadline is the
same for all colleges.
Address any questions regarding adds/drops to Leslie
(room 102A).
Work
Counting for Two Classes
If a student wants to have work (i.e., a painting, essay, research project,
etc.) count for credit towards more than one class, the student must
get advance approval from all instructors involved. To avoid mis-understandings,
the student should have a written note or memo stating such approval
signed by the instructors and kept in the students file in Leslies
office.
UC
Rules and Regulations
Students are expected to follow the UC rules and regulations as set forth
in the UCSB General Catalog. This includes (but is not limited to) rules
regarding academic dishonesty - cheating, plagiarism and collusion. If
a student has any questions regarding these matters, he or she should
contact the Office of the Dean of Students. Briefly stated, materials
(written or otherwise) submitted to fulfill academic requirements must
represent a students own efforts (quoted from the UCSB Academic
Dishonesty pamphlet).
