MATH REQUIREMENTS
- CORE MATH COURSES. Each student is required to take the following CCS mathematics courses:
- Introduction to higher mathematics.
- Linear Algebra
- Advanced Linear Algebra
- Probability and Combinatorics
- Introduction to Real Analysis
- Vector Calculus
- Problem-solving seminar. (3 quarters)
- Theory of Complex Variable (2 quarters)
- Group Theory.
- L&S UPPER DIVISION COURSES. Each student is also required to take the L&S mathematics courses in one of the following two tracks:
Students interested in Applied Mathematics
- Numerical Analysis (Math 104 A,B,C)
- Ordinary Differential Equations (Math 119A or Math 243)
- Partial Differential Equations (Math 124A)
- Real Analysis (Math 118A,B,C)
- Applied Stochastic Processes (PSTAT 160 A)
Students interested in Pure Mathematics.
- Abstract Algebra (Math 111B,C)
- Topology (Math 145A or Math 221A)
- Differential Geometry (Math 147 A)
- Number Theory (Math 115 B)
- Real Analysis (Math 118A,B,C)
Most students are able to fulfill these requirements in their first two years at UCSB. After that, they are encouraged to take graduate courses and to pursue more independent study. A master’s program is also available.
- Completion of a Senior Thesis is also a requirement for all CCS students in the Mathematics Program. This requirement is waived to those students who decide to pursue the Masters program.
- Participation in Summer Research programs and a semester abroad are strongly encouraged.
