Into the Teeth of the Wind

Selected poem from Volume IV, Issue 1

Dolce Departs

Dolce was a poem
an image of grace and love
my connection to the spirit world
a metaphor for endless devotion

soulmate in another life
my eldery lynx Siamese cat, Dolce
lay lifeless in my arms

by way of a tiny needle
the vet had administrated last rites
she didn’t move or whimper
just closed her bright blue eyes

went to sleep and
left me, yowling, bereft
my tears wetting her soft fur
her paws still clinging to me

no longer will I hear her high call to me
to follow her into the bedroom
to jump on my lap, lie on my chest

croon me to sleep with her purring —
lovesong transcending any church hymn
no more will I clip her tiny nails
comb her fur with delight
while she stretches in abandonment

I whisper ”thank you, my darling
for all the precious love you gave me.“
