Course Description

In the tradition of artists' books and prints, book covers, portfolios, and boxes serve as forms to contain content. They are practical holders of word and image, and symbolic repositories of history, memory and narrative. Book covers, portfolios and boxes are crafted to preserve and to reveal that which is contained: the unique art object or the art multiple, precious treasure or mundane clutter, public text or private secret. This class will center on the box and its variants, as holder becomes that which it holds, outside and inside conjoined.

Enrollment is limited to 8 advanced students.

Prerequisite: student must have taken an artists' book course.
