This course will expose students to various aspects of the literary magazine. We will explore diverse concepts and aesthetics of existing magazines, both in print and online. Approaching the mechanisms of literary publishing from both the author and editor perspectives will allow students to familiarize themselves with the functioning of this particular media. Editing another writer's literary work, writing their own, and learning how to submit for publication, students will develop practical tools for the literary world. We will discuss ideas for creating hypothetical journals and explore editors' expectations for contributors. The course is also meant as a preparation for students to join the staff of Spectrum, the College of Creative Studies' own journal, published annually.
