BITS + ATOMS: SCULPTURE AND EXTENDED MEDIA IN THE DIGITAL AGE

Course Description

This studio art course will focus on new hybrid forms of interdisciplinary practice enabled by the tools and conditions of the Internet, Digital Fabrication, Computer Graphics, and Extended Reality. Students will experiment with a range of methods of capture, augmentation, glitch, and dissemination; combining traditional sculpture and mold-making techniques (silicone, alginate, and plaster) with new forms of photogrammetry, digital fabrication (laser cutting and 3D printing), 3D modeling, and Virtual Reality to explore generative translations between material and digital realms. Students are encouraged to reflect critically on their own relationships with technology, and to take an interdisciplinary, experimental, and conceptually rigorous approach to their projects.
