The health and safety of our students and our community is our top priority. Following consultation with faculty, administrative colleagues, students, and staff, we are announcing the cancellation of classes for Friday, December 9.

Although UC Santa Barbara is a significant distance from the Thomas Fire and no danger is posed to our physical campus, UCSB is announcing that all remaining classes on Thursday, December 7, have been cancelled. Given the uncertainties the fire presents, this difficult decision will allow us to assess logistical issues in advance of finals week, which is scheduled to begin Saturday.

What I am going to tell you may run counter to your expectation, as stories of this sort typically relate the romanticized memory of a revelation delivered by a favorite professor or some epiphany received in the course of study. While I have many brilliant memories of my all too brief years at CCS, my takeaway seems incongruous and more personal than any one transcendent moment discovered in the throes of academic reverie.
